#3 Kids Art Workshop @U.B. Kinsey School

Third in the series of eight art workshops for local youth was held at the U.B. Kinsey/ Palmview Elementary School of the Arts and organized in partnership with the Resource Depot. The workshops are designed to cultivate children’s imagination, so it could be built into the design of the Trojan Rocking Horse sculptures for West Palm Beach. Through the workshop, participants explore ideas and dream about their own future and the future of the city.

Led by Finnish architect Marco Casagrande and co-facilitated with local collage artist and founder of Gurferlady - a female-led surf school, Mary Glazier, a.k.a. Gurferlady, the workshop started with a short storytelling session where Marco introduced to the children the 3000-year-old Greek myth of the Trojan Horse and presented the concept of the Trojan Rocking Horse project.  Also helping were the school’s art teachers, Ms. Bootz and Ms. Smith, with a pop-in from the Principal Mr. Bembry – all sharing their joy and excitement to participate in this community project!

Inspired by the stories and prompted by the question, “What is your dream for the city?” children outlined their visions of what a Trojan Rocking Horse could look like and collaged their dreams into the cardboard cut-outs that they made.

To materialize their visions, children had at their disposal a rich assortment of art supplies curated and donated by the Resource Depot. For over two decades, Resource Depot has been a force of creative reuse by turning waste into artistic wonder by collecting and distributing excess materials to benefit classrooms, summer camps, art studios, and, most importantly, the environment.

The workshop also supported the vision and mission statement of U.B. Kinsey/ Palmview Elementary School of the Arts

We envision a collaborative school culture that prepares all students, regardless of their backgrounds, to reach their highest potential by fostering each student's needs academically, socially, and emotionally. UB Kinsey/Palmview Elementary School of the Arts will continue strengthening students' arts and academics with teachers, staff, parents, and community support. We inspire, embrace, and educate our students in an environment that is equitable for all students academically and artistically.

The workshop took place on Tuesday, January 17 2023 at U.B. Kinsey/ Palmview Elementary School of the Arts
